As the world embraces the vibrant month of August, it becomes an opportune time to celebrate Women’s Month, a time to honour and recognize the invaluable contributions of women to society, history, and culture. This month, the focus shifts to empowering and uplifting women from all walks of life, highlighting their achievements and resilience. Among the various events and happenings that symbolize the spirit of Women’s Month, the Women Football World Cup and Netball World Cup stand out as momentous occasions.
Recent incidents involving the South African Women’s national football team, Banyana Banyana and the South African Football Association was a clear indication that there are still inequalities where women sport is concerned. Ahead of the World Cup, Banyana was set for a friendly match with Botswana, which turned out to become an embarrassing moment for football lovers. Banyana deserved a more fitting send-off as the African Champions, yet the venue chosen for the match was a disgrace to the entire women sports industry.
The players insisted on a stadium with greater significance, preferably one that hosted matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The players also disputed contractual and monetary agreements which the South African Football Association (SAFA) failed to uphold. The players’ dissatisfaction has seen SAFA and Government holding meetings to resolve the matter.
“If it was Bafana Bafana, definitely SAFA was going to find a very fitting venue for the match, but because it is Banyana we are being exposed to the harsh truth that Women Sports is not taken seriously and our girls are not valued,” – says a disgruntled women football fan, Sphelele Ndlovu.
In other news, Banyana Banyana have secured a high-profile international friendly against the world’s number one ranked nation, the USA. Desiree Ellis’ troops will take on the USA soon after the 2023 Women’s World Cup in friendly matches scheduled to be played in Cincinnati and Chicago in September 2023.
The reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions will battle it out with the African champions in Cincinnati at TQL Stadium on 21 September, and in Chicago at Soldier Field on 24 September 2023.
Banyana head coach, Ellis, expressed her gratitude, as her side will be facing one of the top nations in the world on their own turf.

The Netball World Cup Takes Off in South Africa!
Taking off in South Africa, this prestigious sporting event promises to be a captivating showcase of athleticism, teamwork, and determination on the part of female athletes from across the globe.
