UniQ Weddings:
The Meyers

Asanda Mkuzo

Our very own Asanda Mkuzo had a chat with a beautiful couple Tania Meyer and Nomfundo (Mlambo) Meyer. Taking us through the marriage and wedding is Nomfundo on behalf of the Meyers.
Knowing that you’ve met “The One” is a different experience for everyone. You can’t put your finger on it but there’s a level of comfort and connection you’ve never felt with anyone else. You just know straight away that, I have to put a ring on the finger😉.

1.  Getting married was probably the biggest step you have taken in this relationship, where did the courage come from?
When I first met Tania, I knew that she was going to be my wife. I even told my friends, and they thought I was just being silly. But I felt such a strong connection to her and making that decision to be committed to her, was easy for me. Life happens, and there are some lessons we learn about ourselves and each other. The journey we embarked on, has led us to the people we are right now. And for us, getting married was a way for us to express our love and commitment to each other.

2. I am sure it was time consuming planning your wedding, did you hire a Wedding Planner or you planned it yourselves?
It was incredibly time consuming. We didn’t hire a wedding planner but we were lucky in that the venue we hired, some contacts of businesses that they’ve worked with and that made it easier. We were living in two different countries at the time, and planning a wedding in another country, so there was a lot of back and forth with emails and pictures and and…so it really was a lot of work.

3. What are the most important things one needs to consider before tying the knot and putting your signature?
– If the person you want to marry is really the one for you?
– Is the relationship you’re building, the one you want.?
– Talk about everything, all your thoughts, desires, and fears.
– And if this is what you both want, then go for it. All the other legal stuff like COP or Prenuptial is dependent on each couple and their circumstances so discuss that as well before and have it sorted out with a lawyer.

4. What was the song played on your wedding day and who selected it?
We both selected the songs with input from our DJ as well. Our music choice got everyone dancing.

5. Did you do a traditional wedding and lobola negotiations?
No, we didn’t have a traditional wedding neither the lobola negotiations. Our families were not in agreement or favour of our decision to get married as a same-sex couple.

6. What is your ideal family set up? Or is it existing already? Tell us more about it.
Our ideal family set up is already existing with us. We spoke about extending our family but we both work with children and decided that we are happy with life as it is right now. Should any of that change though, as things sometimes do, we will discuss and plan for it.

7. Where did you go for a honeymoon and how was it?
We went to Maldives for our honeymoon. It was exquisite. We both love the ocean so being near the sea was amazing. We spent a lot of time together, enjoying the scenery, great food, and fun activities. We even went snorkeling and swam with the sharks.

8. According to you Love is
Love is…different for everyone. There’s no one size fits all and that’s the beauty of it. That’s why understanding your love language and your partners love language is important so that you can continue to fill each other’s love bowl. Love is an act of kindness to yourself.

9. Getting married to my partner ….
…was an emotional journey. When we got married, our families found it difficult to accept it. We decided to go ahead without their involvement. It took them a while to accept and now that they do, things are so much better. We just recently visited home and our families met for the first time and it was incredible. So, if your family is struggling to accept, continue with your life and hopefully they will come around. You can’t put your life on hold. And to families that find it difficult to accept, think about your children’s happiness. That’s the most important thing. Love and support them in their happiness.

10. What can you say to a couple who wants to get married?
Do what makes you happy. If this is something that is important to you for whatever reason, then go ahead. It’s a great way to get the families together and celebrate your love.
